    singular or plural?

    In this sentence:

Knowing both (the?) sides of a good career, the positive(s) and the negative(s) one(s) he wanted to protect his niece......

is it better to use the plural or the singular?

    thanks

Since you say "both" = two sides, you would be better to phrase this : Knowing both sides of a good career, the positive and the negative, he wanted to...

    The positive and negative ones.
"Positive" and "negative" function as adjectives.
    Adjectives are never in plural
