    Often when we refer to someone as being set in their ways it is because they behave in a way contrary to our own lifestyle. For example, my friend's grandmother would always keep all the windows in the house tightly closed for one hour after anyone had bathed and/or washed their hair, no matter how hot it was. She insisted that it was a safety precaution, because our pores were open too wide and we'd catch pneumonia. It was a ridiculous theory, of course, but she was set in her ways and nothing was going to make her change her mind.
