    correct wording

Last week, Mr Tan, the form teacher, told his class that they would be spring-cleaning. The children were very excited.

Jack and Peter mopped the floor. Jack was so engrossed in cleaning the floor that he did not know that he had kicked the pail of water over. Peter did not see the puddle of water on the floor behind him. As he stepped backwards while mopping the floor, he slipped and fell. Fortunately, he was not seriously injured.

    Should I say " ... they would be spring-cleaning the classroom." ?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: correct wording

Yes - otherwise the children could be spring-cleaning the whole school.

It's an amazing thought that this could happen! Not here, it wouldn't.

Thanks, Anglika for the logical explanation.
