    Is verb correct?

I think it would be better if it is phrased / written as follows:
The teacher of the boys punished them for leaving the school without permission.

Is the word 'is' correctly used?
Should it be 'phrased' or 'written' or are both correct?

    Re: Is verb correct?

Why do you use "were" instead of "was" when the sentence refers to something that was desirable?

    is "was desirable" correct?

    Re: Is verb correct?

You can say was, but in formal style, were is preferred.
