    so and only

    Dear teachers,
Could you please see if the following sentences are correct or not?

    Group 1

    a. So dedicated was Galileo to the pursuit of scientific truth that nothing could make him turn back.
    b. So dedicated to the pursuit of scientific truth was Galileo that nothing could make him turn back.
I feel 'b' is awkward. Is that right?
    Group 2
The exercise requires us to rewrite the sentence beginning with 'only'.
His secretary heard of the plan only a few minutes or so before the minister gave orders to carry it out.
    a. Only a few minutes or so before the minister gave orders to carry it out did his secretary hear of the plan.
    b. Only a few minutes or so before his secretary heard of the plan did the the minister give orders to carry it out.
I have a feeling that 'b' doesn't agree with the original sentence but I don't know where the problem lies.
Could you please explain them to me?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Re: so and only

1 They're both OK, but I agree that a) is better.

2 B) breaches the timing- it would have to be 'after his secretary'.
