    correct sentence

    1. Mary's mother's birthday is a week away. Mary's mother decided to make a dress for herself.

    2. Mary's mother's birthday is a week away. She (Mary's mother) decided to make a dress for herself.

    3. Mary's mother's birthday is a week away. She decided to make a dress for herself.

Which is the correct sentence to stress that Mary's mother, not Mary, is going to make a dress?

I think sentence 2 is the appropriate sentence.

    Re: correct sentence

All three are correct, though there is no need to say Mary's mother twice.
So, I would say No. 3.

Mary's mother's birthday is a week away. She decided to make a dress for herself.

    Re: correct sentence

Mary wasn't subject in the first sentence, it was her mother. If you start the next sentence with SHE, we know you are thinking of Mary's mum.

    Re: correct sentence

In addition--and before someone brings up the question of Mary's gender, why not rework the problem in another way? Say,

Ex: Mary's mother's birthday is a week away, so she decided to make a dress for herself.

    Does that help?
