It seems to me that the best choice is sentence 1.

    #1 is correct.

#2 could be rephrased : She also accuses him of having pressed Mr Bingley into abandoning Elizabeth's sister

My English teacher (born and graduated in English Literature in Canada) corrected the first sentence to the second one. Are you sure there is no mistake? Why did she correct it?

Yes. Sentence 2 is incorrect. "...of having pressed Mr. Bingley into abandoning Elizabeth's sister..." is also correct, but not very graceful.

Anglika, I was typing while you posted - I don't mean to insult your perfectly respectable alternative.

I stand by my opinion that "pressed him to abandon" is right and "pressed him to abandoning" is wrong.

I would ask her for her reasons.

Yes. Press her to tell you what she found incorrect. We will be interested to hear her answer.
