    using "an"

    A co-worker is writing a medical guideline for training purposes. She used "an" in a sentence prior to the abbreviation M.D., such as "An M.D.'s written order". When challenged on this, she stated that the rule is to use an if the consonant begins with a vowel sound. Is this accurate?

    Cool Re: using "an"

    As the rule in using English articles, we "USE" the article "an" if a word begins in a Vowel sound as in, "an accountant, an engineer, an imp, an umbrella and an octagon."

    Just don't be confused of referring the rule to the spelling ok!!

    Re: using "an"

    It is indeed a useful piece of advice to remember that the sound and not the spelling determine the article.

    I think your co-worker is right. "M.D." may start with a consonant but it is pronounced as /em-dee/, a vowel sound at the start that's why we use "an".
