    holding something out

Proffer = to offer something by holding it out, or to offer advice or an opinion.

I wonder how we can offer by holding something out?

Could anyone explain it, perhaps with some practical examples?

    Re: holding something out

You pick up a box of chocolates from the table. Holding it in your hand, you extend your arm and offer the box to your friend.

You are holding out the box to your friend.
