    fair/fairest

I think that would be fairest.
I think that would be most fair.

    Which sentence is correct?

If both are, what is the difference in meaning?

    Many thanks.

    Re: fair/fairest

Hi, I've noticed here in Aust. that these superlatives can be misused and still understood. Usually a shorter word [ one or two syllables ] is made into a superlative adjective by adding ..est. Longer words would become a mouthful so usually see 'most' put before . e.g. most beautiful . I think fairest is right. Unfortunately a great deal of common usage is incorrect in formal terms but accepted simply because it is commonly accepted. 'Most fair' does not sound so bad, but is uncommon.

Additionally, -est pairs up with the in superlatives:

    fair,
    fairer,
    the fairest,
    most fair (very fair)

Ex: I think that would be the fairest thing to do.
Ex: I think that would be most fair.

For the second sentence it could also be "I think that would be fairest". Am I correct? If so, what is the difference in meaning?

    Many thanks.
