Smile replacing of 'around' with 'up n down'

He was walking 'around' the hall with great agitation.
Why shouldn't I say 'around' here and should replace it with 'up and down'?

It's been long time since we 'had' met.
Is there such as 'is been'?
    Why 'had' should be avoided?

    Thanks.

    .
'Around' covers more floor space than 'up and down'.

'It's been' = It has been.
'Had' (past perfect) is inappropriate here, as only one past event is being considered.

Can't I say 'back and forth' or 'to and fro' here?
