    What I know is that when a woman cries herself to sleep she is very sad and crying in bed before she has slept. I think the meaning is literal.

    I agree that it has a literal meaning. If someone cries himself or herself to sleep, the person is very sad and cries until he or she falls asleep.

    Note that the expression can be used to apply to both males and females.
