    Disclaimer: I'am not a teacher.
    (i) Uncountable and unspecific (i.e. in a general sense)
e.g. Water is our life blood.
    (ii) Plural nouns and unspecific
e.g. Students should work hard in their exams.

How about names, like proper names of places...

Take a look at this test:

Do we use THE or no article with this name?

    Re: the/zero article

[Student, so don't believe everything I say]

Some country names require a definite article, such as the ones whose names [seem] to have a plural form or are composed of more "states". The United States, or the Philippines are such examples. For the rest of them, I'd suggest trying to place them in a sentence such as "I'm going to/in ..." and see if they need an article. I can't be sure, but to my ear, the ones that require "the" are 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30, 32, 34, 38, 39, 43, 44, (45 used to have one, but I'd say now it's obsolete), 46, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57.

I may be wrong about some of them, but I hope not all of them :p

    Dear Sir,

Is it correct to say that the definite article should not be used for "shops and stores, cinemas and theatres" categories, like Virgin Megastore, Parking Shop, Odeon Cinema and Drury Lane Theatre, or are there any exceptions? If not, could you give me some examples about that and the guiding rule, if any?

    Thank you and best regards.

BTW. What is the Ritz? Is it a hotel or cinema in London. : (

    Re: the/zero article

And what if I'm not familiar with the name and I don't know what it is? Would I go for the or zero article?
