    a chance and radom breaking-off

    Hi Teacher:

Could you tell me the meaning of the underlined part? Thanks a lot.

Valery radicalized the implications hidden in the concept of art as the work of genius, because the lack of inherent finality left it to the recipents to end the process they experienced. Such a closure runs counter to perfection which the genius is supposed to produce. A chance and random breaking-off of a formative process cannot contain anything binding. From this, then it follows that what he makes of what he finds must be left to the recipient. One way of understanding a work of art is then no less legitimate than another.

I think it is suggesting if an artist in his work does not carry it through to full completion, the observer is not restricted in response. Therefore it is up to the observer to decide what his/her response should be.
