    What is the difference between "soul" and "spirit"?

    They can be synonyms; they have some overlapping meanings.

    They also have divergent meanings. Sometimes, the differences come to mind subconsiously, giving each a slightly different connotation, but that is determined only from the context in which they are used.

    In my own mind, I see a soul as the quiet essence of a person, and I see his spirit as being more animated. I think the only reason I personally feel this way, is the connotation of action in the word "spirited" - which means active in one sense. Others may "feel" other distinctions.
