    operations-oriented

Could anyone please explain the following bold expressions in easy English?

    1. UPS had always been operations-oriented, but globalization and competition forced the company to become market-driven.

I see the word "operation" has various meanings. What does it mean in the above context?

    2. Electronics gave UPS industrial engineers the tools to reassess and redefine their role and function. So, in addition to auditing, doing time measurements, motion studies...... the department's efforts could also be reengineered for the customer: looking at customer logistics, customer volume development, and customer satisfaction.

    Thank you.

UPS prided itself on its excellent operational practice - it was efficient, accurate and economical. "Operations" in this context is the various means of transporting packages from place to place.

I take it that you are asking about "customer volume development" - which is business-speak for getting lots more customers to use the services.
