    Question them, them, them...

    "The variables that develop earlier than other variables may influence them, but may not be influenced by them."

    I think the meaning of this sentence is clear, but I found this them-them thing and thought it might be not that clear. Is it?

    Your sentence is not ambiguous, but it is not as clear as it could be. I would replace the last them with those later developing variables.
