    synthesis

Lucy completed her assignment with John's help.

    1. Without John's help, Lucy could not complete her assignment.

    2. Without John's help, Lucy could not have completed her assignment.

In joining the sentences in bold, which is the correct sentence? Is 'could' the correct auxiliary verb?

    Thank you very much.

Both sentences are correct depending on what your point is, what you want to say. An auxiliary veb gives further semantic information about the verb following it. 'Could' is the correct auxiliary verb, but 'would' goes well, too, only it alters the meaning a bit.

You can also write sentence nr 2 as follows:

    1. Had it not been for John's help, Lucy could not have completed her assignment.

    or

    2. But for John's help, Lucy could not have completed her assignment.

    Re: synthesis

Sentence 2 is the better choice.
    Sentence 1 reads something like:
Lucy did not complete her assignment because John didn't help her.
