    for a time

    He went to Paris for a time
    I pushed the vase and it fell on its side.


    Please explain the coloured phrases.

    for a time = for a short period of time
    fell on its side = now it didn't stand but was lying on it side.

    But still I cannot understand the `on it side'.

    Also, in the phrase `on it side', to whom/what the `it' refers to?

    Sorry, it was a typo. It must be "on its side" i.e on the side of the vase.
