    A sentence is a type of independent clause. A clause is not a type of sentence.

    No, they are not the same thing.

    e.g. If the weather is fine, I will go shopping.

    I will go shopping. -sentence ; it can work independently

    If the weather is fine - [subordinate conditional] clause - it cannot work independently, because it is connected to the main sentence by the conditional conjunction "if".
