    indirect speech

What did Wiliam tell James? He told him to fax ... to New York.
My sentence is this one "Fax this report to New York.
Does "this" change here? What does it change to?
    Thanks

It does not if it is in the shared knowledge of both the speaker and the hearer what the referent of 'this' is. If it is not in the shared knowledge, 'this' should be 'a'

    Mind you, I am a self-study non-native non-teacher. In a word, I am a 'non'

    Re: indirect speech

Direct speech: William told James, "Fax this report to New York right away." (William's exact words)

Indirect speech: William told James to fax the report to New York. (William's exact meaning, but not his exact words) You could also say: William told James to fax this report or that report depending on the context.
