    what does it mean

a sign, shape or object which is used to represent something else

i came across the above sentence, and wondered why they had used the word else. what i mean is this sentence give me a kind of idea that there is something and then, there is something else; and, if something didn't even exist, why use something else instead of something?

Why, aren't there any preceding sentences that "something" may refer too? If there isn't any then "else" would be of no use in this sentence.

    Re: what does it mean

Are we trading something else as a compound noun?

    Re: what does it mean

I don't think that 'something else' is a compound noun for else is an adjective that could also collocate with nothing, someone, etc...
Perhaps what it means is that it represents something not itself that's why they used 'else'. But I'm not sure about it. Maybe others could give better explanation on this....

First of all, it is not a sentence. What it is is the definition for symbol, and a symbol does not, of course, represent itself. It represents something else. (There is nothing odd about that, but your question sure seems to be an odd one.)
