    Smile Capitalization

Please check the following statements and help me to select the correct one:

    1. a. We studied the declaration of independence in History class.
    b. We studied the Declaration of Independence in history class.

    2. a. The Smoky Mountains are in the Southeastern part of the country.
    b. The Smoky Mountains are in the southeastern part of the country.

I think #1 should be (a) and #2 should be (a) too, what do you think guys?

    Thank you all.

    Re: Capitalization

Is history class a proper noun, one that names a specific course like, History 101? If not, then don't captalize history.

Is southwestern a proper name? If not, then don't capitalize it.

    Note,
Lowercase the compass directions north, south, east, and west (including northern, southern, eastern, and western) when not part of a proper name. Capitalize in reference to a proper name or region. The Northwest, but northwestern. The West Coast, but western Washington.

    Re: Capitalization

How should I know whether southeastern is a proper name or not? I think here it is not a direction, does it mean it is a proper name?

    Re: Capitalization

In that context, southwestern isn't a proper name, but is here in Southwestern University.
