    took out

    They took out a 40 000 mortgage.

    I know, here, the "took out" could mean "borrowed". But I am not sure about the usage of "took out" here, because I can't find, in any dicationary, the meaning of the phrasal verb "took out".

    Then, could you tell me in what way it has been used?
    If possible, could you give me some similar examples?

    In this context, it means just that - I borrowed.

    You can also say "I went to MacDonalds and bought a take out meal"; OR "I took him out" = I got rid of him, probably by killing him
