    Smile take or took

Which word is to be used in the following sentence: "take" or "took" and why?
My idea is it should be "took" because of the sequence of tenses but "take" also sounds OK to me. Here is the sentence:

After the assassination attempt, President Reagan's doctor suggested that he "take"/"took" a short rest at Camp David.
