    When the comes before a vowel sound--not a letter, but a vowel "sound", speakers, but not all, pronounce it as th[i:], with a long vowel.

    Ex: th[i:] apple
    Ex: th[i:] orange



    There's more:
    Emphatic th[i:]
    When we wish to place emphasis on a particular word, we can use "emphatic the", whether or not the word begins with a consonant or vowel sound. Read more here ...
