it would get rid of her

    Dear experts,

What does 'it would get rid of her' could mean in here?

More context: Colonel Luscombe was to have a little gossip with a beautiful unknown lady.

    He said to himself:

'Tact! A bit obvious, perhaps, but anyway it would get rid of her for a bit. Though what he was going to gossip about to Elvira, he really did not know.'

He is trying to persuade another person to go away for a little time so he can talk to a third person.
