I give a dictation to my pupils - an oral activity, or

I dictate a text to my pupils.

I am doing a dictation for my English class- it means I`m preparing a dictation text for my English class.
Although I`d use do a dictation, I read on google that make a dictation is used, as well.

I would have thought that you give dictation to someone who takes the dictation.
