    Can I say that?

    Hi guys,

I was studying english and I got this phrase:

    ---------------

    I walked into a wall.

    - I wasn't looking where I was going.
    - I should have been looking where I was going.
    - I should have looked where I was going.

These three statements should be correct.

Now I would like to know if these statements below are both corrects:

    - I had to be more carefully.
    - I should have been more carefully.

    ---------------

    Thanks for your help guys!

    Re: Can I say that?

The last two sentences are not correct. 'careful' would be correct in those sentences. You need the adjective 'careful' to modify "I", not the adverb "carefully".

You need an adjectif not an adverb

The last two sentences are not correct because the verb be is a linking verb and it is followed by an adjective and not by an adverb :

I had to be more careful.
I should have been more careful.

    to be careful
