    1. He won the first gold medal in the history of German gymnastics.
    2. He won the first gold medal in the history of the German gymnastics.
    Which is correct?

    In nearly all cases, 2 would be plain wrong; the "the" could only be justified if there were different styles of gymnastics practised in a single country - say 'the German gymnastics' and 'the Austrian gymnastics'.

    On second thoughts, I don't buy that exception (it's true, I think, but doesn't apply to the real world)! So 2's wrong.
