    a ribbon through the gauging

What does the word gauging refer to below:

"It was my idea running a ribbon through the gauging," she said proudly,
drawing back to contemplate the blouse she was trimming.

    Any ideas?

She is running a ribbon through the place where two sections of fabric are joined. It can also be called "gathering".

Gauging, a dressmaking technique, was used to attach a large amount of fabric onto a smaller length of fabric.

This translating business is very interesting. You come across all sorts of different areas . Now all I have to do is to find out what it is called in Swedish.
