pass (on) the information

Is there any actual difference between the two following sentences:
1. "I will pass on this information to John."
2. "I will pass this information to John."?

In fact, should (1) it be:
3. "I will pass this information on to John."?

One thing worth remembering - if a pronoun used (e.g. it), put it after the verb, and before the particle:
I will pass it (= this information) on to John.
