I am feeling like an idiot, but............ok, what do you call people in Britain? I know that to show respect you are supposed to use their first name so while it is ok to ask a friend "could you..........." when you speak to your boss you need to invert their name "Ann, could you ..........." what are other rules? Do you know of any helpful site?
You have it reversed. Friends you call 'Ann' and bosses you call 'Ms Smith', and prefacing a request with the name makes no difference to the courteousness of the communication.
Another rule: don't call people in Britain 'Americans'.
