Can you give me an example, explaining the usage of exterior?

    Hello Everyone,

In Longman Dictionary, the third meaning of exterior is defined as

coming from or relating to facts, situations etc other than the one you are considering:

And the example used to illustrate is "information that is exterior to the text itself"

I can't fully understand part of the definition "the one you are condiering" and the example given.

Can you please help me here?

And what are the differences between superficial and exterior?

    Regards

    Sky

It means that you are you information from outside the tet you are reading; if you draw, for example, on fats you know about the writer's life to help your interpretation of the text, you are using "information that is exterior to the text itself".

'Superficial' means 'shallow' (intellectually, morally, etc)

Thanks very much for your reply!!!

What do you mean by saying "you are you information "? And can you give me one more example? I still can't fully understand the word? Sorry!

    Regards

I think, in that case, exterior information: extra information from the sources other than the source which you are currently reading.

    EX:

Let’s assume, when you were in the University, you wrote a thesis about the textile industry in China. Therefore, you have large amount of information about the topic of your thesis. And, let’s say, today you came across an article entitled “textile industry in China”, in that case the information you already had is exterior to the article in the newspaper.(I wish I was right, dear teachers)

I am neither a native, nor a teacher
