    I was <> the poorer

    Let's have a look at this sentence:

    Unfortunately, they had not been able to understand the programs yet, but
    at least I was not $31000 the poorer.

    It's about a person who bought a strange computer and now thinks that it was not in vain.

    I can catch the tenor, but it is the first time I have met such a cunstruction.
    I mean the second part of the sentence, of course.

    Could somebody tell me where I can read anything about this?
    Or maybe you can give me some more examples, or any other help.

    "at least I was not xxxxx the poorer" - simply : "at least I did not spend all that money"; could also mean "at least I did not spend all that money for no reason/result".

    It is a fairly common colloquial structure and idiom.
