    Is there any actual difference in the meaning of the two above sentences?

    I think they are interchangeable, and choice will depend on the writer's stylistic preference.

    For me this latter option reads better, and the former looks more formal or something like that: it's so "smart". But I may be totally wrong. What's your personal stylistic preference in this regard?
