    Smile Do rumors abound

    Do rumors abound?

Does the above sound right? If yes, does it mean "Are there many rumors?" Thanks.

    Re: Do rumors abound

They certainly do, and it does mean that there are a number of them and that they are being spread a lot. It doesn't necessarily means that there are hundreds of different ones, though. For example, there are a number of rumours about the Madeleine McCann case at the moment- she was murdered, accidentally overdosed, etc. You could say that rumours abound there, though there are only a handful, with minor variations, but they are being discussed a lot.

another way of saying 'rumours abound' is 'rumours are rife'. Rife isn't widely used; I don't think it would sound right in your question: Are rumours rife?

Incidentally: my added u isn't a correction; it's just the way I spell it. If you prefer to use the (more sensible) Am E spelling, be my guest.
