    Re: vegetable

A person with severe brain damage and no hope of recovery is often referred to as "a vegetable" (although the proper medical term is "persistent vegitative state). They are unconscious and unaware.

Sometimes if a person is going to sit and do nothing for a while, just to relax, he may say "I'm going to veg out", meaning he's going to be physically and mentally inactive, like a vegetable.
