    crazy sign

    there is a sign up in the building and it says...
    our staff are the best.
    i thought it was supposed to be our staff is the best. am i wrong?

    If they are thinking of their staff as a collection of individuals, then the plural form works. It's more common in the US to use the singular verb for companies, etc., but not impossible to use the plural.

    In AmE, the sign would (or should) say "Our staff is the best." However, in BrE, they usually say "Our staff are the best."

    Likewise: "Queen is my favorite band." (AmE)
    "Queen are my favorite band." (BrE)
