    Were Vs Was

    "If I was Hitler I'd send my bombers across in the middle of the disarmament conference"

    The writer was obvioulsy not "Hitler", and he was drawing a hypothetical parallel --- hence, shouldn't it have been "If I were Hitler"?

    Yes, it should have been "were".

    In formal language, 'were' is preferred, but 'was' is widely used among native speakers.
