When a cat is on your lap and you are stroking the cat's fur. You can feel a vibration inside the cat if it is happy and it may make a low rumbling sound of contentment. This is purring.

The meow sound is a loud call when a cat is trying to get your attention.

So what do you call the meow sound, just as it is?

It can be just meow or if it was soft call we say the cat was mewing. If it is a shrill howl when the cat is fighting it would be called a caterwaul

    Re: purr

How about those somewhat loving sounds cat do with other cats? I think it still sounds like a purr.

    Re: purr

It can also be termed "chirrup". My cat would chatter her teeth when watching birds.

    Re: purr

I thought Chirp and Chirrup are bird sounds.

    Re: purr

So they are - but cats and humans also make such noises.
