    Cool House on fire

Please, meaning for the following sentence:

"We get on like a house on fire"

Does it mean they get connected, think the same, work like one person, or something like that? It's bizarre for me the expression "House on fire" because it's too clear as image. May it mean something metaphorical?

    Thanks a lot

    Re: House on fire

Something that progresses 'like a house on fire' develops quickly and is hard to stop. I agree that it sounds odd when talking about a friendship, but that (friendship) is - I'd guess - the most common context for this image. Usually, in that context, it refers to the friendship developing quickly - 'We only met yesterday, but we're getting on like a house on fire. We keep finding that our interests and preferences are the same.' (It can refer to the warmth of the friendship too - but not to fiery tempers!)
