at a time, at one time

    Hi there.

"Two trappers would be isolated from civilization for many months at a time."

    1. What does 'at a time' mean here?
    2. Can 'at a time' be replaced with 'at one time'?

    Thanks,

    1. What does 'at a time' mean here? In a single stretch

    Thanks,
2 is not so easy to answer. If you said 'at one time', usually the context would make your meaning clear. But in this context -

Two trappers would be isolated from civilization for many months at one time, but the introduction of the helicopter taxi service has changed that.

    - 'at one time' means 'formerly'. In fact, to make this meaning clear, it would be wise to rephrase like this:

At one time, two trappers would be isolated from civilization for many months at a time, but the introduction of the helicopter taxi service has changed that.
