    3 Qs

I would like to ask native speakers of English the following things.

According to an article, adults who as babies were breast-fed for seven to nine months had higher IQs than those who were breast-fed for two weeks or less. The study found that their scores on intelligence tests rose gradually the longer they had been breast-fed as babies. The average increase: about 6 points. (The average IQ is 100)

#1 I think the underlined part is paraphrased as the higher their scores on intelligence tests became gradually, the longer they had been breast-fed as babies. If not so, what is it?

#2 I cannot understand the relation between the underlined part and the average 6 point increase.
Simply the average gap of IQ tests between adults who as babies were breast-fed for seven to nine months and those who were breast-fed for two weeks or less is 6 point?

#3 What is it about breast milk that makes babies so smart? I think what about breast milk is emphasized by is it ~ that. So originally it is “what about breast milk makes babies so smart?”

    Thank you very much

#1 Look at it this way, the longer [the time], the higher [the score]
... the longer they had been breast-fed, the higher their scores rose.
#2 Babies breast-fed for seven to nine months had higher IQs (6 points higher in score) than those breast-fed for two weeks or less.

Q: What is it about breast milk that makes babies so smart?
A: It is _______ in breast milk that makes babies so smart.
A: The thing about breast milk that makes babies so smart is _______.

Q: Can you tell us what it is about breast milk that ...?
A: ______ makes babies so smart.

Q: What about breast milk makes babies so smart?

    _______________
I never would have guessed that it would have to do with / be something in the breast milk. I always assumed it had to do with being held and nurtured by the mother all those months.

In a way, yes, but the true referent is the pronoun it. To show you, I'll replace that pronoun with the words the thing:

What is it ... that makes babies so smart?
What is the thing ... that makes babies so smart?
The thing ... that makes babies so smart is what?

    Thank you very much, Soup.

Can the same thing be said to the following? I mean the structure of #3 is the same with the folloing?
    He broke the vase yesterday.
It was he that broke the vase yesterday.
It was the vase that he broke yesterday.
It was yesterday that he broke the vase.

    Who broke the vase yesterday?
Who was it that broke the vase yesterday?

In all of the “it was ~ that case,” is the referent of that it?
