    "I like to do my own thing" means that you prefer to take care of things your own way, whether it is the standard method or not. You like to do what pleases you without concern for how it might appear to others.
    For example:
    "Etiquette experts say that there are certain colors you should never wear to a wedding, but I like to do my own thing and wear whatever color strikes my fancy, even if it's black or hot pink."


    "I like to do my own things" implies that you don't want any assistance with a particular task.
    "Can I help you pack for your trip?"
    "No thank you, I like to do my own things."
