    To refrain from tautology

    I have just discovered an interesting.
    "Which" can be substituted with "that". Of course I knew it earlier, but only today I really caught the idea. Of course we must keep in mind the difference between defining and non-defining clauses.

    For example:
    The first articla repotrs the findings of a survey which found that over half the working population are so tired by the time they get home that their home lives are suffering.

    Could anybody speculate on this subject?

    In your instance which and that have different functions which relative pronoun , that conjunction, the 'that-clause'

    Yes, you are right. But I could have used that instead of which, which would not be so smooth.
