    which is correct?

    Hi,

could you please tell me which of these is correct and why:

    1) They are/have been registered for VAT since 1st January 2000.
    2) They are/have been registered for VAT from 1st January 2000.

    Thanks a lot!

    Hanka

    Re: which is correct?

While meaning essentially the same, it could be argued that the first indicates that the registration was after Jan. 1st; the second indicates that the registration took effect on Jan. 1st.

In both cases, "are" is incorrect.

    Re: which is correct?

And what exactly implies in the first sentence that it was after January 1st?

    Re: which is correct?

"since" = in the period between (the time mentioned) and the time under consideration

    Re: which is correct?

But when I say e.g. "They have lived here since 2000", I mean the starting point. Or does it also imply "in the period from"?

    Re: which is correct?

You mean they have live here in the period starting in 2000 and ending in the present.

So it is the same as with my original sentence - they have been registered since 1st January (starting from 1st january and are still registered now)
