    utturrly

    Dear teachers,

    Would you tell me if the both adverbs "utterly" and "categorically" in the following sentences are absolutely interchangeable.

    I am afraid I utterly refuse to believe anything he says.

    We categorically deny my involvement in the scandal.

    Thanks in advance.

    V.

    Re: utturrly

    utterly = completely, fully, totally.

    categorically = without any doubt, without the possibility of changing.

    It is very subtle, but I feel you could use them interchangeably in the first sentence but not in the second.
