Question what's wrong with the following 5 sentences?

The widespread use of plastic bags impacts the environment negatively.

A number of my friends are attending the lecture on Friday.

When I was a student, I made every effort to always do my best.

This year there were less serious crimes committed than last year.

This is a topic I'm very interested in.

Normally I would ask you to have a go yourself; but I think whoever asked you this has a rather unrealistic view of language - and pointing you to web-sites that explain these 'errors' would only perpetuate that view.

Some teachers insist that 'impact' doesn't mean 'has an impact on'. Most dictionaries disagree.

Can your teacher honestly say that 'a number.... is' is the only accurate version?

When I was a student, I made every effort to always do my best.
Look elsewhere in this forum for the term 'split infinitive'. Not many credible authorities today would suggest that its wrong; informal maybe.

This year there were less serious crimes committed than last year.
Some teachers insist that "less" refers to an amount and "fewer" refers to a countable quantity. This prescription flies in the face of much actual usage. Has anyone ever seen a supermarket checkout marked '12 items or fewer'?

Some teachers insist that prepositions shouldn't go at the end of sentences. This is nonsense.
I'm afraid your teacher and many teachers don't see eye to eye. But if these rules are what you're taught in order to pass an exam, you need to learn them.
