    bed of guns -meaning

This island is well fortified, being, to use a sea phrase, all round a bed of guns.

What is the meaning of this phrase?

    Re: bed of guns -meaning

It means that the island was extremely well fortified. It had a bed of guns all round it. "A bed of guns" is saying that there were many guns [?cannons] set close together.
